The status of the Arabic language is declining in the country for political and legislative reasons. The Arabic language is no longer considered an official language according to a legislation by the Israeli government under the name of “National law”.
Part of SDC’s agenda is to strengthen the Arabic language and raise its status among our children and younger generations. We decided to use the occasion of the International Arabic Language Day On 18 December 2021, to create an exciting and fun educational program. The aim of this program is to celebrate the Arabic language in our Arabic schools in Haifa.
The program started with reaching out to all primary schools in Haifa and donating a package of stories in Arabic to the school libraries. On the 16 and 17 December, The schools were provided with various recreational and enrichment activities, including: a story time with a storyteller, drama and theater workshops, a workshop for learning Arabic through educational games, murals, hosting well-known Arab writers and poets.
We presented this program to fourteen Arab schools in Haifa, both public and private schools, some of them fully cooperated by organizing a school-wide Arabic Language celebration day, which was well received by students, parents, and educational staff.
